Birngruber has served as director of the institute's Biomedical Optics Center, the largest biomedical laser center in Germany and one of the largest in Europe, and as visiting faculty at the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Harvard Medical School.

He received his award during the Biomedical Optics (BiOS) Hot Topics session at SPIE Photonics West in San Francisco in January, where he spoke on his observations on past and future developments in the field.

In making the award, Symposium Chairs James Fujimoto and R. Rox Anderson characterized Birngruber as one of the visionaries in the field, and a pioneer in the earliest studies of laser-tissue interaction, ophthalmic laser applications, and photodynamic therapy.
